Print Publication

Architrave

Architrave is an annual publication of design students' work at the University of Florida. Started in 1994, the entire publication process, from financing to production, is run by students. In collaboration with other editors, I worked on the design and production of the publication.

Architrave 21 is an endless scroll of student work, celebrating details and exploring how one image can speak for an entire project. As Creative Editor, along with Bre Rouse, I developed a folding instructional pamphlet that supplemented the book, allowing it to expand for the first time across mediums into a digital application (Aurasma). Here, students could view bodies of work online in their entirety, so that a complete understanding of the projects could be gained.

I also led the design of the gallery launch event, where the print publication is distributed to students. I curated videos  and a sequence of flashing questions to project onto a series of translucent hanging sheets that students walked between, creating an immersive semi-digital/semi-real environment that echoed the publication's theme. Architrave 22 seeks to dismantle the concept that anything exists in isolation, suggesting instead that all ideas are interrelated. It aims to portray projects as they are naturally created: allied through a greater web of influence. Architrave 22 exposes this connective tissue using a series of ‘point clouds’ that express the relationships between design issues. We hope that through this exposition we are able to unveil the connectivity between work both within the University of Florida and within the global scale of design.

As Creative Editor, along with Bre Rouse, I worked on developing the theme, branding, layouts, and production of the publication. View the publication in its entirety here.

Outcomes
-
1000 copies of the publication were produced. Students within the College received a copy of the publication free of charge. It serves as a diverse archive of student work.

University of Florida's College of Design, Construction, and Planning retained a portion of these books to mail out to alumni and prominent architecture firms. Architrave is also used by the College for promotional and marketing purposes: it gives prospective students insight into the caliber of work produced within the College.

Theme
-
There is a common misconception that every project starts at a "beginning" and concludes at an "end." Such a concept denies the true nature of design: a non-linear, collaborative, and crucially chaotic process.

Student Survey
-
Members of the Architrave writing team produced a list of topics representative of the rolling conversations that occurred during meetings. Each member was then surveyed, answering the question, "Which topics do you perceive as being related?" Topics were then connected to each other in a point cloud (image above) based on the team's associations. The nature of these links are analyzed within the written essays in the publication.

Not a Bible
-
"For the sake of your ingenuity and creative health, please do not seek this publication as a manual. Let it be an archive of a diverse body of work. Let it provoke questions of success, of improvement, of alternative approaches. If anything, peruse with underlying thoughts of:
How would I think about this?
How would I design this?
Because architecture has no bible. Long-established definitions are subject to change. It is your responsibility to make your own."
