Branding

frank gathering

frank gathering is an annual conference in Gainesville, Florida, in its seventh year. It is an essential community for movement builders and change makers—the people who use communications to drive positive social, institutional and behavioral change.

As part of the design team, which was responsible for developing the conference brand and collateral from conception to launch, 2019's theme ‘Space Between’ came to life. We explored space in all of its different manifestations: the spaces between us, the spaces that includeor exclude—us, the spaces that allow us to feel welcomed. Other team responsibilities included organizing a detailed schedule with incremental deadlines for design deliverables leading up to the date of the conference.

Final Logo with Illustrations
-
Playing with negative space, orientation, and perspectives, the frank 2019 brand reflects theme 'Space Between.' The logo is supplemented by whimsical illustrations of spaces in downtown Gainesville that conference attendees engage with. The minimalist illustration style invites attendees to fill in the intentional ambiguities with their imagination.

The Main Stage
-
frank gathering is hosted primarily in the most iconic building in downtown Gainesville, the Hippodrome. Its monumental steps were adorned with vinyl and served as wayfinding for the event. Perspectival typography invites attendees inside to the main stage.

Custom Name Tag & Lanyards
-
In addition to being easily identifiable among the crowds in downtown Gainesville, custom enamel pins (each representing a public interest issue) can be attached to the lanyards so that attendees can quickly find and connect with others that are passionate about the same issues.
Outcomes
-
The three day conference hosted over thirty main stage speakers. Breakout sessions were held in various locations in downtown Gainesville.

Tear-Out Coupons
-
Local food and beverage coupons could be torn out from the name tags. Our rationale for this placement was that attendees would always have their name tags with them, and thus would have access to use the coupons anytime they wished without needing to plan ahead.

Branded Water Bottle
-
Using the water bottle to emphasize literally the 'space between,' each design element was separated by color into two layers: one color printed on the front of the water bottle, and the other printed (and reversed) on the back of the water bottle. When lined up, they create a cohesive image.
