boxcart emerged after researching Gainesville, Florida's inequity problem (which is both financial and racial, and reflects a bigger nationwide problem). It is a problem rooted in systems, both governmental and otherwise, that are not addressing the needs of citizens living at or below the federal poverty line. Porters Community, a historically Black neighborhood and area of concentrated poverty in Gainesville, functions as a case study for this project, but it could be executed in other communities across the USA that experience similar inequities.

Case Study:
Porters Community
-
The project focuses on one neighborhood in particular: Porters Community. Porters is a historically black neighborhood near downtown Gainesville, FL, with 39% of residents living below the federal poverty threshold, according to 2015 census data.
Porters also qualifies as an example of a food desert (an urban area where one third of residents are at poverty level AND one third live more than 1 mile from a market selling fresh food), based on some quick Google searches for fresh food in the area.
